The History and Purpose of the Institute of Seamanship The Institute of Seamanship was founded by Lieutenant Commander Tom Peppitt, RNR in 2000 with Admiral of the Fleet Sir Julian Oswald as President, Commander Neil Murray as Secretary and Mr Bruce Jenkins as Treasurer. Tom Peppitt became Chairman. These four have since retired. John Johnson-Allen MA FRHistS FRIN became Chairman in succession to Tom Peppit and retired in September 2023 after 16 years. Clive Edwards MBA, B.Ed. became Chairman in succession to John Johnson-Allen. Rear Admiral John Lang has become President, Richard Boulton succeeded Neil Murray. Members come from all backgrounds, but with a common interest in seamanship, whether practical, theoretical, historical, contemporary or futuristic.
